Students enrolled in the Small Fruit and Nut Culture course (AGPS 3083) visit Post Family Winery located in Altus, Arkansas.
Students are given a brief history of Post Family Winery, which was established in 1880.
Plants in the vineyards begin going through senescence in preparation for the up coming winter.
Rye is planted in between the rows of grapes which will be disked back into the soil in early spring to be used as a source of nutrients by the grape plants.
To ensure a good harvest of grapes during the next growing season, a lot of this year’s growth will be pruned off after these plants become dormant.
Students look at the mechanical harvester which is used to remove grapes from the vine.
Harvested grapes would be placed in these large crates and carried to the wine press.
One of the original wine presses used when Post Family Winery first started.
Harvested grapes are placed in this press where juice is extracted from the grapes.
Extracted juice is than sent to these large stainless steel fermentation tanks.
Some wine is still fermented in these wooden barrels.
Once the wine is fermented, it will be sent to the bottling plant.
Once the wine is bottled, it will be packaged and marketed.
Students sample some of the finished product.
